The Benefits of a Tobacco Free Workplace

Tobacco related illnesses and deaths account for much of the medical expenses of the United States. The sad thing is that these illnesses and deaths can be prevented, and in effect, smokers are choosing their fate.

As an employer, there may be things you can do to make people aware of the benefits of a tobacco free workplace, and one of those things begins with you.

Employer’s Part in the Tobacco Free Workplace

If you have smokers at the workplace, you know that the smoke is not only annoying to other workers but is also a health hazard. Healthcare costs are consequently increased, and insurance rates go up in workplaces where tobacco is used.

In addition, fire safety is decreased and absenteeism rises. As if to add insult to injury, a work environment with smokers has furniture that will always stink and must be replaced often. When you look at the whole picture, benefits of a tobacco free workplace are many and large.

As an employer, you need to create firm smoking policies and make sure they are clear to your managers. Managers are the individuals who have to enforce them, so ambiguous or unclear policies will make them unenforceable.

Perhaps you could also make a program incentive where nonsmokers and those who stop smoking for a certain period of time will get a bonus when the cost of healthcare goes down. Such action will provide more benefits of a tobacco free workplace. Many municipalities and states have laws concerning tobacco use at work, and violating them can cost the employee and your company money.

Employee’s Part in the Tobacco Free Workplace

If you are an employee who smokes, you are no doubt aware of what you are doing to yourself, and that quitting smoking may be as much a matter of self-esteem as health. However, you are also probably aware that your smoke harms others. Many people who smoke are considerate of others and choose a tobacco free workplace by smoking outside.
However, some smokers are not considerate, and must have rules put in place to enforce a health workplace for their peers. As an employee, you may be subject to laws as well as company rules. You may see restrictions such as:

⦁ No smoking within 25 feet of door
⦁ Employee smoking area located in rear of building
⦁ Employees who smoke may be subject to higher costs for health insurance

There are many variations, but these are major themes that say, “This Company will not tolerate exposure of healthy employees to smoke, nor will the company pick up the tab for smokers’ health insurance.” Because smoking is a choice, this is only logical.

If your company does not have a tobacco free policy then see your manager or other company representatives and inform them of the benefits of a tobacco free workplace.

I found the session to be rather informative in regards to items found in foods and what to try to avoid. And which types of foods are better for our bodies. I am really looking forward to making some of the foods from the recipes that were given us – 10 items needed.
The success we have at Finish Line Chiropractic would not be possible without the marketing system we have in place. Our marketing development coordinator, Kay Grobel, is what holds it all together. She is great at contacting people and building relationships, which has then turned into great opportunities for us to get in front of various businesses and groups. She is great at organizing events and helping make sure they go smoothly. We also utilize various marketing tools and programs, which h…
I have spent 3 years on the US Ski Team, I am a Junior National Champion and a 3x World Juniors Member. I have essentially put my body through a blender. From all the crashes and hospital visits I never knew if my back and body would ever look, function, or feel normal again. That is until I was referred to DR. James Midboe at Finish Line Chiropractic. I now move better, feel better and am able to live a happier, healthier, pain free life. Make the time to go see Finish Line Chiropractic and tak…
After hosting 24 CPC BNG events, we were a little nervous bringing in a “body” speaker to address our business folks, as most of our speakers have focused on “head and/or heart” topics in the past. Well, Dr.Natalie addressed the whole brain and body and hit it out of the park. She reminded us we cannot serve our God-given missions if we have a weak, unhealthy body. And so much disease comes from what we put in our mouths and lifestyle habits. As we know, obesity, diabetes, ADHD, depr…
I just want to say a big THANK YOU for your help last night. You did a great job and you made my job easier. I appreciate you. I had 3-4 people comment how cheerful you were and how competent you were. Actually, I think you’re ‘doctor material’. Have you ever thought of going back to school? Anyway…..thanks again. I loved having you there last night. Success, Health, and Happiness,
Whenever I work with Kay on a project I always find her to be very organized and efficient and always with a smile. She is a self-motivator and has great follow through when working on any project. Her commitment and dedication are on the top of the scale.
